Ingredients and Substitutions
- Tequila. I prefer a blanco tequila but you can use your favorite. I recommend additive-free tequilas such as G4 Tequila, Siete Leguas and El Tequileno. Find more additive-free tequilas here.
- Infused tequila. I infused tequila with a habanero pepper but you can use jalapeño-infused tequila instead (steps on how to infuse tequila are below).
- Watermelon juice. It's easy to make your own watermelon juice for this recipe but store-bought also works. If you buy watermelon juice, check the label as bottled watermelon juice can contain added sugar.
- Orange liqueur. Any brand will work. A splash of orange juice will also suffice or you can eliminate this ingredient.

How to Make Spicy Watermelon Margaritas

Recipe FAQs
Thinly slice one habanero or jalapeño pepper and add it to a jar with 1-2 cups of tequila. Use more tequila or less pepper if you are sensitive to spice. Cover the jar and let it sit for 1-2 days. The longer it sits, the spicier it gets. Remove the pepper by straining the tequila and then store it in an airtight container.
Cut up a watermelon and add it to a blender. Blend until it is totally pulverized (about 30 seconds-1 minute) then pour the mixture over a fine mesh strainer into a bowl or pitcher. That's it, super simple!
You only need one cup of juice for this recipe so you can juice a quarter or a half of a watermelon for this and then save the rest for a snack!
Yes, you can double or triple the recipe to make a large pitcher of watermelon margaritas. Keep it in the fridge and add ice to individual glasses before serving.
Sarah's Top Tips
- Choose a ripe watermelon if you are making homemade juice. A ripe watermelon will result in a sweeter cocktail.
- Adjust the acidity and spiciness depending on your personal preference.
- Use freshly squeezed lime juice over bottled for a more vibrant cocktail.
- Leftover watermelon juice will stay good in the fridge for a few days. Drink it as is or add sparkling water and lime juice for a great mocktail.
Serving
This spicy margarita is best served over ice with a spicy, salted rim and garnished with a wedge of lime.
I like to pair this recipe with St. Louis Ribs, Burrata and Grilled Peach Salad, Grilled Chicken and Strawberry Salad or BBQ Chicken Tacos.
