🌟Why You'll Love this Recipe
- Requires less oil than deep frying. If you're trying to consume less oil, investing in an air fryer is the best way to enjoy crispy fries without the oil. It's easily my favorite kitchen tool. - Just as quick as frozen fries. These homemade steak fries are so quick and easy, you can whip them up from simple ingredients in the same amount of time it takes to cook frozen steak fries.
- The perfect side dish. Serve these fabulous steak fries with a juicy burger, your favorite protein and veggies, or simply enjoy them with your favorite dipping sauce. They are perfect with my Cast Iron Burgers, Air Fryer Haddock, Warm Lobster Rolls or Turkey Smash Burgers!
🥘Ingredients and Substitutions
- Potatoes- I developed this air fryer steak fries recipe using Yukon gold potatoes. If desired, you can also make this recipe using russet potatoes or sweet potatoes, but this can alter the cooking time.
- Oil- When air frying, it is best to use a neutral, cooking oil with a high smoke point. I recommend extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil, but vegetable oil is another good option. Or, if necessary, use a cooking spray and spray the homemade steak fries liberally before tossing them with seasonings.
- Seasonings- I kept it really simple to make this recipe realistic for everyday cooking. All you'll need is salt, paprika and garlic powder. My homemade french fry seasoning is another great seasoning to try, too!
See the recipe card below for the remaining ingredients and quantities.
🔪Instructions
- Season the potatoes. Place the potato wedges in a large bowl and sprinkle with a little oil, salt, garlic powder, and paprika. Toss until the steak fries are well coated in the spices.
- Air fry for 20-25 minutes. Spread the potato wedges in the air fryer basket or tray and cook until the air fryer steak fries are crispy, fork tender, and golden brown.
- Serve. Sprinkle the homemade fries with flakey sea salt and serve with your favorite dipping sauce such as ketchup, barbecue sauce, or your favorite fry sauce.
💭Recipe FAQs
The simple difference between french fries and steak fries is the cut. French fries are cut into thinner match sticks whereas steak fries are cut into thick wedges. If you're interested in more traditional fries, you'll love these seasoned fries.
If your air fryer steak fries aren't crispy, it's likely the basket of your air fryer was too full and they were overlapping in the air fryer. Depending on the size of your air fryer, it may be necessary to cook a second batch.
The easiest way to test your fries doneness is to pierce them with a fork or knife. If the utensil goes through the potato wedge without resistance, the fries are done. If there is any crunchiness or resistance, cook until the centers are creamy.
👩🏻🍳Chef Tips
- Preheat the air fryer! Not all air fryer recipes require a preheat, but it is best to preheat when cooking fries. This will give them the best crispy edges and help give them the best golden color.
- Scrub the potatoes well. Potatoes grow in the ground and are naturally very dirty. Yukon gold potatoes have a naturally thin skin but still need a thorough rinse and scrub to remove the dirt and debris.
- Begin checking for doneness at the 20-minute mark. Depending on the thickness of your potato wedges and your air fryer model, the actual cooking time will need to be adjusted. Some air fryer models run on the hotter side and the steak fries will be done in close to 20 minutes, whereas others will need a longer cook time.
