Ingredients and Substitutions
- Frozen french fries - This air fryer recipe is made with frozen french fries. I have not tested these air fryer frozen fries using homemade french fries. Based on my experience making my Smashed Potatoes, you would need to boil the homemade fries first before air frying. For best results, use a bag of frozen, pre-cooked fries.
- Olive oil - The oil is used to help stick the spices to the air fryer frozen fries. If you don't have olive oil, you can use another neutral oil like vegetable oil or avocado oil.
- Spices - If you've made my Argentine Red Shrimp with Cajun Butter Sauce, you've already got all the spices you need in your pantry. Smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, cayenne, and onion powder make the best french fry seasoning.
See the recipe card below for the remaining ingredients and quantities.
Variations
- Use any kind of frozen french fry you have. You could even do sweet potato fries. Just keep the weighted amount the same.
- Make spicy fries: Increase the amount of smoked paprika and cayenne called for.
Instructions
- Coat the frozen fries in french fry seasoning. Place the frozen fries in a large mixing bowl and add salt, garlic powder, smoked paprika, cayenne and a drizzle of olive oil.
- Toss to coat the fries. Make sure the seasoning is evenly distributed for the best seasoned fries.
- Air fry. Air fry for 15-20 minutes at 400 degrees F, or until they are hot and crispy. Shake or flip the fries using a spatula halfway through to ensure they cook through evenly.
- Serve while hot. Sprinkle the air fryer frozen fries with flakey sea salt, if desired and a dipping sauce of choice.
Recipe FAQs
Cooking in the air fryer is typically healthier because it allows you to cook with significantly less oil than oven cooking or deep frying. Frozen french fries, however, are deep-fried prior to being frozen, so they are not necessarily lower in oil. If you want to make homemade potatoes that are not deep fried, try my Air Fryer Steak Fries, Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, or even Butternut Squash or Air Fryer Carrots for an extra healthy twist.
Ketchup is a classic with french fries, but it's not the only option! Try ranch, fry sauce, bbq sauce, mustard, homemade spicy mayonnaise, or cheese sauce.
If you have leftover fries from either making seasoned fries at home or from ordering takeout, using the air fryer to reheat them is the best way to make them crispy again. Reheat leftover fries at 400 degrees F for a couple of minutes until hot again.
Top Tips
- Avoid overfilling the air fryer basket. In order to make food crispy, the air fryer needs enough space to allow the air to circulate. If you overfill the basket, the air won't be able to circulate, preventing the food from crisping up. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to fry in batches.
- Adjust the cook time based on the type of french fries you use. You can use any type of frozen french fry here, but the thickness of the cut will change the amount of time you'll need to cook. For example, shoestring-style fries will need less time and waffle fries, potato wedges, and steak fries will likely need more time.
