Equipment

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 yellow onion diced
  • 2 carrots diced
  • 2 celery stalks diced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 1 pound ground turkey (can also use ground beef, ground pork or sausage)
  • ½ cup dry red wine optional
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon fresh basil
  • salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil & butter in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add diced onion, carrots and celery and sauté for 5 minutes while stirring occasionally.
  • Add in the salt, minced garlic and ground turkey. Cook while crumbling for 5 minutes.
  • Pour in the red wine (if using), deglaze the bottom of the pot & allow to cook for 5 minutes. Add in the can of crushed tomatoes, black pepper, and basil.
  • Bring the sauce to a boil, cover, then turn down the heat to medium-low and simmer for 25 minutes. Season with more salt to taste.
  • Serve with spaghetti and top with parmesan cheese, if desired.

Notes

  • Buy pre-packaged mirepoix to save time on chopping. This is my top tip!
  • This turkey meat sauce recipe makes about 6 servings. If you don't use all of it at one time then it can be stored in a freezer-safe container or storage bag for a few months. Let it defrost, in the refrigerator or on the counter for a few hours before reheating.
  • Keep it in the fridge all week to enjoy as leftovers.
  • I highly recommend using fresh basil over dried. It is much more flavorful and full of nutrients.
  • If the carrots are tender, the sauce is ready! Carrots typically taste the longest to cook so if they are still a little hard, let the sauce simmer for a little longer.
