Ingredients and Substitutions
- Frozen French fries. This air fryer recipe is made with frozen fries. I have not tested this recipe using homemade fries. Based on my experience making Smashed Potatoes, you would need to boil the homemade fries first before air frying. For best results, use a bag of frozen, pre-cooked fries.
- Olive oil. The oil is used to help stick the spices to the shoestring fries. If you don't have olive oil, you can use another neutral oil like vegetable or avocado oil.
- Spices. If you've made my Argentine Red Shrimp with Cajun Butter Sauce, you've already got all the spices you need in your pantry. Smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, cayenne, and onion powder make the best French fry seasoning.
See the recipe card below for the remaining ingredients and quantities.
Instructions
Step 1
Place the frozen fries in a large mixing bowl and add salt, garlic powder, smoked paprika, cayenne and a drizzle of olive oil or cooking spray. Toss to coat.
Step 2
Air fry for 15-20 minutes at 400 degrees F, or until they are hot and crispy. Shake or flip the fries halfway through to ensure they cook through evenly. Sprinkle the air fryer french fries with flakey sea salt and serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
Sarah's Top Top Tips
- Avoid overfilling the air fryer basket. To make food crispy, the air fryer needs enough space to allow the air to circulate. If you overfill the basket, the air won't be able to circulate, preventing the food from crisping up. Be sure to add the fries in a single layer. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook in batches.
- Adjust the cook time based on the type of fries you use. You can use any type of frozen french fry here, but the thickness of the fries will change the amount of time you'll need to cook. Shoestring-style fries cook pretty quickly so if you use waffle fries, potato wedges, and steak fries, you will likely need additional time.
- Give the fries a good shake halfway through to ensure they cook evenly on all sides.
Serving
These fries go well with just about anything, especially this chick fil a chicken nuggets recipe, Air Fryer Haddock or Turkey Smash Burgers! Ketchup is a classic with french fries, but it's not the only option! Try ranch, fry sauce, BBQ sauce, mustard, homemade spicy mayonnaise, or cheese sauce.
Storage & Reheating
If you have leftover shoestring fries, using the air fryer to reheat them is the best way to make them crispy again. Reheat leftover fries at 400 degrees F for a couple of minutes until hot again. Store in an airtight container for a few days.
